Velentines Day when and how did it start!

Valentine's Day: A Day of Romance

At the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day. It was not until much later, however, that the day became definitively associated with love. During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine's Day should be a day for romance.

Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America. Howland, known as the “Mother of the Valentine,” made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as "scrap." Amazing that today we call this scrap booking! A huge industry now!

Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas) Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines. So that means only 15% of Men buy cards for this holiday.

Personally I appreciate a card or flowers on a day "Just because he wanted to!"

Happy Valentines Day!

Eating Carrots and Sweet Potatoes

Not only do both vegetables contain Vitamin A, proven to keep skin luminous with a natural rosy glow found attractive by others, but it also keeps our skin smooth! Scientists at Scotland's St. Andrews University conducted a study and found both men and women preferred a natural glow over a bronzed suntan. The reason is we associate a healthy glow with a natural and healthy lifestyle.

Carrots

A great way to get a lot of carrots into your diet and a great way to start your day is by juicing. Juicing carrots is a great way for your body to get all the natural enzymes found in raw vegetables. Juicing carrots doesn't have to be boring, they are super sweet and if you want to, you can add an orange...mmm, even your kids will love this! You can add other veggies as well since carrots are quite sweet in themselves.

So give it a try, your skin will thank you!

Testimonial Tuesday!

Laurie, I am writing to you to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your PRO Extreme Natural Pain Relief.. When I first started using it, I must admit, I was very skeptical, but as time went on, my hands were getting more and more limber, and I was able to make a fist with them. You see I have rheumatoid arthritis in my hands. I was taking medication for this so that my hands would not be so swollen, and I could make a fist. However, the medications I was taking only made my teeth start turning black. My hands were at a point that I was not able to bend them, and if I had to open a can, a door, or write, I had to use both hands, and then I still had no strength to do those little tasks.

When I was first approached to try your cream, I was willing to try about anything. After several days, I noticed that I was able to bend my fingers! Then the, swelling started going down. By the third week, I was able to take off my wedding ring for the first time in three years. I could open cans, I could open doors, and I had strength again. The best part is that I no longer had to take the medications I was prescribed.

I can not thank you enough for letting me be a part of your miracle cream. Now my hands are almost normal again, I don't have to hide them anymore by putting them in my pockets

Another big notice is that my hands are getting the right circulation, and they are a normal color instead of the gray they used to be.

My job requires me to work with my hands all day, I am a cook. Before I started using the cream I would come home and cry from the pain I had, and the swelling that I would have from the work day. Now, I can barely tell that I have arthritis anymore. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me back one of the most important things I need, my hands. I hope anyone having arthritis will try this cream, because if it worked for my hands...it can work for anyone. Thank you again..and again.."

What Is In Bottled Water?

Bottled Water Found to Contain over 24,000 Chemicals, Including Endocrine Disruptors.

Widespread consumer demand for plastic products that are free of the hormone-disrupting chemical bisphenol-A (BPA) has led to some significant positive changes in the way that food, beverage and water containers are manufactured. But a new study out of Germany has found that thousands of other potentially harmful chemicals are still leeching from plastic products into food and beverages, including an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) known as di(2-ethylhexyl) fumarate, or DEHF, that is completely unregulated.

Martin Wagner and his colleague, Jorg Oehlmann, from the Goethe University Frankfurt, in conjunction with a team of researchers from the German Federal Institute of Hydrology, learned this after conducting tests of 18 different bottled water products to look for the presence of EDCs. Using an advanced combination of bioassay work and high-resolution mass spectrometry, the team identified some 24,520 different chemicals present in the tested water.

But of major concern, and the apparent underpinning of the study’s findings, was DEHF, a plasticizer chemical that is used to make plastic bottles more flexible. According to reports, DEHF was clearly identified in the tested water as the most consistent and obvious culprit causing anti-estrogenic activity. Despite trace amounts of more than 24,000 other potentially damaging chemicals, DEHF stood out as the only possible EDC capable of inducing this particular observed activity, a highly concerning observation.

The study’s published abstract explains that 13 of the 18 bottled water products tested exhibited “significant” anti-estrogenic activity, while 16 of the 18 samples were found to inhibit the body’s androgen receptors by an astounding 90 percent. Additionally, the other 24,520 chemical traces besides DEHF were also identified as exhibiting antagonistic activity, which means that they, too, are detrimental to the body’s hormonal system.

Many thousands of endocrine-disrupting chemicals used in plastic production prove material unsafe
But DEHF is apparently not alone in causing significant damage to the endocrine system, as the team was unable to identify this chemical as being specifically anti-androgenic. What this suggests is that there is some other chemical, or chemical combination, being leeched into bottled water that is interfering with the body’s chemical signaling system, which is, of course, responsible for hormone production and use within the body.

“We confirmed the identity and biological activity of DEHF and additional isomers of dioctyl fumarate and maleate using authentic standards,” report the researchers. “Since DEHF is anti-estrogenic but not anti-androgenic we conclude that additional, yet unidentified EDCs must contribute to the antagonistic effect of bottled water.”
So while these specific findings concerning DEHF are groundbreaking, the overall conclusion to be drawn from this research is that far more study is needed to determine the types of chemicals that are being leeched from plastic into our food and water, not to mention the extent of this leeching. And since the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the rest of the three-letter government agencies will surely never get around to conducting this important research, independent science will simply have to take up the charge.
“This work is a ‘tour de force’ in identification of endocrine disruptors in packaged materials,” says Bruce Blumberg from the University of California, Irvine, as quoted by Chemistry World. This type of analysis, he adds, “will be very important for our future understanding of what chemicals we are routinely exposed to and which of these pose hazards of being endocrine disruptors.”

You can read the full study abstract here: www.plosone.org

In the meantime, conscious consumers can avoid plastic containers whenever possible and simply use glass or steel containers instead to avoid these unknown risks.

Top 6 Inflammatory Foods To Avoid

There has been a lot of talk about the dangers of and damage caused in the body by inflammation.  Here is a compilation of some of the top foods to avoid and also to eat to keep inflammation at bay.
1. White flour baked goods
“White baked goods make the top of the list because white flour becomes white sugar right in your mouth,” says Julie Daniluk, RHN, author of “Meals that Heal Inflammation.” The starches break into sugars immediately; that’s why it raises your blood sugar so fast. When your blood sugar spikes, you end up with inflammation. What’s more, white flour carries a double whammy because of the gluten content. Many people have a difficult time digesting gluten and inflammation results. “Quite a lot of the population is walking around inflamed,” says Daniluk. To replace white flour goods, try brown rice, amaranth, quinoa and teff, a grain from Africa that’s gaining popularity in gluten-free circles.
2. French fries/potato chips
Are French fries evil? The problem is that frying foods in oil at extremely high temperatures, enough to put a crispy edge on a fry, creates a neurotoxin chemical called acrylamide, which causes terrible inflammation. The only way to resolve that problem is to bake at lower temperatures. Same for potato chips. To avoid, bake fries in the oven and look for baked chips that don’t contain oil. Organic baked corn chips are a great substitute if it’s a crunch you’re after.
3. Grilled sausages
The biggest problem with sausages, and you may as well include bacon here, is the nitrates they contain. We've heard of nitrates for years; it’s a cancer-causing chemical that causes inflammation. Worse, we cook animal fats at high temps on the griddle and those black marks that crop up from overcooking, called creosote, are carcinogenic as well. Vitamin C can protect you from nitrates, so if you do enjoy these foods occasionally, Daniluk says to eat an orange alongside them. Either avoid them, bake instead of fry or grill, and try switching to nitrate-free bacon.
4. Cola
The caramel coloring in brown cola contains a chemical that has been banned in other countries but not in America. It’s called 4-methylimidazole or 4-MI, is derived from ammonia and has been shown to cause cancer in lab animals. Daniluk thinks it should be avoided even though safety levels for humans have not been established. Plus, cola carries a double dose of inflammation as there are nine teaspoons of sugar in one regular 12-ounce can. Sugar spikes insulin and brings on chronic inflammation. “Anything that causes cancer is inflammatory, too, since cancer is the most inflammatory disease of all; anything that increases your risk of cancer sets you up for inflammation.”
5. Microwave popcorn
The artificial butter flavoring in most popcorn has been linked to serious inflammation. Daniluk says it’s hard on both the lungs and liver, and her concern is that if we know the fumes from the steaming bag contain a lung irritant, imagine what it does to your digestive system. It also contains fats from the highly processed partially hydrogenated oils being cooked at high temperature, and these transfats are also inflammatory. She suggests old-fashioned air popping.
If you’re not opposed to using a microwave, try putting 4 tablespoons of popcorn kernels in a brown paper lunch bag and fold the top over tightly. Microwave for two minutes or until popping slows. Sprinkle with Parmesan and rosemary.
6. Artificially dyed candy
Artificial dyes are made from petroleum and gasoline byproducts and may cause disruption within body chemistry and hormone function, which could lead to inflammation. Five food colorings remain in use in the United States — though with much controversy. Some researchers think they are responsible for everything from ADHD to migraines and Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Naturally colored and flavored gummies, lollipops and gums are available at many grocery stores. Naturally dyed candies are made from beets and carrots. Look for candy labels that say “contains no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.”

10 Reasons Why Green Tea Is The Healthiest Drink

Green tea is the healthiest beverage on the planet.

It is loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that have powerful effects on the body. This includes improved brain function, fat loss, a lower risk of cancer and many other incredible benefits.

Here are 10 health benefits of green tea that have been confirmed in human research studies.

1. Green Tea Contains Various Bio-Active Compounds That Can Improve Health Green tea is more than just green liquid.
Many of the bio-active compounds in the tea leaves do make it into the final drink, which contains large amounts of important nutrients. It is loaded with polyphenols like flavonoids and catechins, which function as powerful antioxidants (1).
These substances can reduce the formation of free radicals in the body, protecting cells and molecules from damage. These free radicals are known to play a role in aging and all sorts of diseases.
One of the more powerful compounds in green tea is the antioxidant Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), which has been studied to treat various diseases and may be one of the main reasons green tea has such powerful medicinal properties.
Green tea also has small amounts of minerals that are important for health.
Try to choose a higher quality brand of green tea, because some of the lower quality brands can contain excessive levels of fluoride (2). That being said, even if you choose a lower quality brand, the benefits still far outweigh any risk.

Bottom Line: Green tea is loaded with bioactive compounds that can have various beneficial effects on health.

2. Compounds in Green Tea Can Improve Brain Function and Make You Smarter Green tea does more than just keep you awake, it can also make you smarter. The key active ingredient is caffeine, which is a known stimulant.

It doesn’t contain as much as coffee, but enough to produce a response without causing the “jittery” effects associated with too much caffeine. What caffeine does in the brain is to block an inhibitory neurotransmitter called Adenosine. This way, it actually increases the firing of neurons and the concentration of neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine (34).

Caffeine has been intensively studied before and consistently leads to improvements in various aspects of brain function, including improved mood, vigilance, reaction time and memory (5). However… green tea contains more than just caffeine. It also has the amino acid L-theanine, which is able to cross the blood-brain barrier (6).

L-theanine increases the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, which has anti-anxiety effects. It also increases dopamine and the production of alpha waves in the brain (789).

Studies show that caffeine and L-theanine can have synergistic effects. Thecombination of the two is particularly potent at improving brain function (1011).

Because of the L-theanine and the smaller dose of caffeine, green tea can give you a much milder and different kind of “buzz” than coffee. Many people report having more stable energy and being much more productive when they drink green tea, compared to coffee.

Bottom Line: Green tea contains less caffeine than coffee, but enough to produce an effect. It also contains the amino acid L-theanine, which can work synergistically with caffeine to improve brain function.

3. Green Tea Increases Fat Burning and Improves Physical Performance

If you look at the ingredients list for any fat burning supplement, chances are that green tea will be on there. This is because green tea has been shown to increase fat burning and boost the metabolic rate, in human controlled trials (1213).

In one study in 10 healthy men, green tea increased energy expenditure by 4% (14). Another study showed that fat oxidation was increased by 17%, indicating that green tea may selectively increase the burning of fat (15).

However, I’d like to point out that some studies on green tea don’t show any increase in metabolism, so the effects may depend on the individual (16).

Caffeine itself has also been shown to improve physical performance by mobilizing fatty acids from the fat tissues and making them available for use as energy (1718). In two separate review studies, caffeine has been shown to increase physical performance by 11-12%, on average (1920).

Bottom Line: Green tea has been shown to boost the metabolic rate and increase fat burning in the short term, although not all studies agree.
4. Antioxidants in Green Tea May Lower Your Risk of Various Types of Cancer

Cancer is caused by uncontrolled growth of cells. It is one of the world’s leading causes of death. It is well known that oxidative damage contributes to the development of cancer and that antioxidants can have a protective effect (21).

Green tea is an excellent source of powerful antioxidants, so it makes perfect sense that it could reduce your risk of cancer, which it appears to do:
  • Breast cancer: A meta-analysis of observational studies found that women who drank the most green tea had a 22% lower risk of developing breast cancer, the most common cancer in women (22).
  • Prostate cancer: One study found that men drinking green tea had a 48% lower risk of developing prostate cancer, which is the most common cancer in men (23).
  • Colo-rectal cancer: A study of 69,710 Chinese women found that green tea drinkers had a 57% lower risk of colo-rectal cancer (24).
Multiple other observational studies show that green tea drinkers are significantly less likely to get various types of cancer (252627). It is important to keep in mind that it may be a bad idea to put milk in your tea, because it can reduce the antioxidant value (28).

Bottom Line: Green tea has powerful antioxidants that may protect against cancer. Multiple studies show that green tea drinkers have a lower risk of various types of cancer.
5. Green Tea May Protect Your Brain in Old Age, Lowering Your Risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

Not only can green tea improve brain function in the short term, it may also protect your brain in old age. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common neuro-degenerative disease in humans and a leading cause of dementia.

Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neuro-degenerative disease and involves the death of dopamine producing neurons in the brain. Multiple studies show that the catechin compounds in green tea can have various protective effects on neurons in test tubes and animal models, potentially lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s (293031).

Bottom Line: The bio-active compounds in green tea can have various protective effects on neurons and may reduce the risk of both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, the two most common neuro-degenerative disorders.
6. Green Tea Can Kill Bacteria, Which Improves Dental Health and Lowers Your Risk of Infection

The catechins in green tea have other biological effects as well. Some studies show that they can kill bacteria and inhibit viruses like the influenza virus, potentially lowering your risk of infections (32333435).

Streptococcus mutans is the primary harmful bacteria in the mouth. It causes plaque formation and is a
leading contributor to cavities and tooth decay.

Studies show that the catechins in green tea can inhibit the growth of streptococcus mutans. Green tea consumption is associated with improved dental health and a lower risk of caries (363738394041).

Another awesome benefit of green tea… multiple studies show that it can reduce bad breath (4243).

Bottom Line: The catechins in green tea may inhibit the growth of bacteria and some viruses. This can lower the risk of infections and lead to improvements in dental health, a lower risk of caries and reduced bad breath.
7. Green Tea May Lower Your Risk of Type II Diabetes

Type II diabetes is a disease that has reached epidemic proportions in the past few decades and now afflicts about 300 million people worldwide.

This disease involves having elevated blood sugar levels in the context of insulin resistance or an inability to produce insulin. Studies show that green tea can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels (4445).

One study in Japanese individuals found that those who drank the most green tea had a 42% lower risk of developing type II diabetes (46). According to a review of 7 studies with a total of 286,701 individuals, green tea drinkers had an 18% lower risk of becoming diabetic (47).

Bottom Line: Some controlled trials show that green tea can cause mild reductions in blood sugar levels. It may also lower the risk of developing type II diabetes in the long term.
8. Green Tea May Reduce Your Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke, are the biggest causes of death in the world (48). Studies show that green tea can improve some of the main risk factors for these diseases.

This includes total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides (49). Green tea also dramatically increases the antioxidant capability of the blood, which protects the LDL cholesterol particles from oxidation, which is one part of the pathway towards heart disease (505152).

Given the beneficial effects on risk factors, it is not surprising to see that green tea drinkers have up to a 31% lower risk of cardiovascular disease (535455).

Bottom Line: Green tea has been shown to lower total and LDL cholesterol, as well as protect the LDL particles from oxidation. Observational studies show that green tea drinkers have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
9. Green Tea Can Help You Lose Weight and Lower Your Risk of Becoming Obese

Given that green tea can boost the metabolic rate in the short term, it makes sense that it could help you lose weight. Several studies show that green tea leads to decreases in body fat, especially in the abdominal area (565758).

One of these studies was a randomized controlled trial in 240 men and women that went on for 12 weeks. In this study, the green tea group had significant decreases in body fat percentage, body weight, waist circumference and abdominal fat (59).

However, some studies don’t show a statistically significant increases in weight loss with green tea, so this needs to be taken with a grain of salt (60).

Bottom Line: Some studies show that green tea leads to increased weight loss. It is particularly effective at reducing the dangerous abdominal fat.
10. Green Tea May Decrease Your Risk of Dying and Help You Live Longer

Of course, we all have to die eventually. That is inevitable. However, given that green tea drinkers are at a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer, it makes sense that it could help you live longer.

In a study of 40,530 Japanese adults, those who drank the most green tea (5 or more cups per day) were significantly less likely to die during an 11 year period (61):
  • Death of all causes: 23% lower in women, 12% lower in men.
  • Death from heart disease: 31% lower in women, 22% lower in men.
  • Death from stroke: 42% lower in women, 35% lower in men.
Another study in 14,001 elderly Japanese individuals aged 65-84 years found that those who drank the most green tea were 76% less likely to die during the 6 year study period (62).

Take Home Message

If you want to feel better, lose weight and lower your risk of chronic diseases, then you might want to consider making green tea a regular part of your life.

Winter air can wreak havoc on your hair! What to do?

At Natures Light we are always looking for homemade recipes or ideas to aid in improving your health, hair and body.  Here is an idea on Winter Hair!

Dandruff and scalp irritation almost double during the winter months when dry air dehydrates the scalp.  To soothe and balance the pH level on your scalp do the following:

Rinse hair with a mix of Apple Cider vinegar and 2 cups of cold water after shampooing.  Leave on your hair for about 15 minutes.  Rinse well and condition as usual.

Increasing your intake of water not only helps your scalp it also helps the rest of your body
